United Rugby Championship: Stormers’ John Dobson wants more accuracy against Ulster

Stormers coach John Dobson is frustrated with the Stormers’ handling errors even after putting Cardiff to the sword in Cape Town on Sunday.

Dobson’s men claimed a 40-3 victory against Cardiff in the United Rugby Championship scoring six tries to the visitor’s zero.

This means that in the last two weeks the Stormers side had scored 15 tries – after they also thrashed Zebre Parma 55-7 – but yet it could be even more with several chances not taken against Cardiff.

Handling errors and forced passes were at the core of why the Stormers squandered opportunities, to further compound Cardiff’s misery, much to the disappointment of Dobson.

“For us to be direct it means to not force that last pass,” Dobson told IOL Sport.

“When we got in behind them, the only way to let them back in is to make a handling mistake, so it is a frustration for us.

“This is a team that is desperate to play really attractive rugby. They feel the space and they can feel the guy and they want to make the offload and it looks great, but it is costing us some points. That was the major frustration for us.”

The back-to-back bonus points were against two teams struggling for position on the table and Dobson knows when Ulster come knocking at the door this weekend his side must be more accurate in all facets of the game.

Ulster is second in the standings to the Stormers’ seventh and it will be a whole different challenge when they arrive.

“They are a very big, physical and hard-carrying team,” he said.

“They are probably more direct than Cardiff and they are at the top of the URC. They beat Leinster in appalling conditions two weeks ago.

“We would need to be more accurate at the set-piece than we were. Maybe a guy like Frans (Malherbe) is back in the mix.
