Under-fire Erik ten Hag breaks silence on John Murtough Man United exit and impact on his own future

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag admits he misses John Murtough's support but does not believe his departure will alter their plans for next season.

Murtough tendered his resignation as football director last week and officially left after more than ten years at United on Tuesday. United intend to bring in Dan Ashworth from Newcastle as sporting director while Southampton director of football Jason Wilcox is set to come in as technical director.

There is uncertainty over Ten Hag's position as United are sixth in the Premier League table with a minus goal difference and unlikely to qualify for the Champions League.

Murtough appointed Ten Hag as the United manager in 2022 and the Dutchman stressed his working conditions remain "perfect".

"You mention something there for the new season, I think it's very important that the new ownership is working on this, they have to replace his function to go into a new season," Ten Hag said.

"For the moment, of course, I miss his (Murtough's) support, the surrounding support, you miss that. But he moved on, he has made choices. We worked very good together. I say thank you to John and wish him all the best for the future.

"No [it won't affect plans]. For me, as I said previously, I work with the new ownership very good, closely together. It will not change, it doesn't have an impact on the way I can work here.

"The conditions were perfect, they are still perfect. I am happy with that but we want to set the right conditions to be successful."
