UFC 279: Kamaru Usman gives honest opinion on Khamzat Chimaev vs Nate Diaz

Kamaru Usman has questioned the booking of Khamzat Chimaev vs Nate Diaz at UFC 279.

This Saturday night at UFC 279, the Ultimate Fighting Championship will return to the fight capital of the world as Las Vegas plays host to a pretty fascinating pay-per-view event.

While it may not have the most stacked card of all-time, the main bout of the evening between Khamzat Chimaev and Nate Diaz has got everyone talking.

The popular opinion is that Chimaev will run away with the victory but as we know, if there’s anyone you can’t count out in this game it’s Nathan Diaz.

Plenty of fighters and pundits have had their say on the booking of this contest and as it turns out, that includes former UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman.

During a recent appearance on Joe Rogan’s podcast, Usman spoke candidly about the match-up and what Chimaev needs to do in order to earn a crack at the title.

“Absolutely not, you can’t [count out Nate Diaz], but [Khamzat Chimaev vs Nate Diaz] it’s a bizarre fight. It’s a bizarre fight that doesn’t really make sense. I still think it’s hard to just say Khamzat [gets the next title shot]. You gotta jump Gilbert Burns, you jump Masvidal.

“I think what’s more interesting is him versus Covington. That’s the ultimate test, because Covington does everything. Yeah, it’s Covington, you gotta get past Covington.”

Covington, as it stands, is out of action following the alleged assault he suffered at a Miami steakhouse earlier this year.

We imagine Kamaru Usman will be watching closely this weekend to see what unfolds between Chimaev and Diaz, but in reality, it isn’t going to impact his own future too much.
