Two men charged after Manchester City's match with Aston Villa

Two football fans have been charged following Manchester City's Premier League game with Aston Villa at the Etihad Stadium yesterday (22 May 2022).

Phillip Maxwell (01/04/94), of Anzio Row, Knowsley, has been charged with throwing a missile (pyrotechnic) onto the pitch and will appear at Manchester and Salford Magistrates' Court on 23 May 2022.

Paul Colbridge (17/08/84), of Whitegate Drive, Salford, has been charged with going onto the pitch and will appear at Manchester and Salford Magistrates' Court on 7 June 2022.

Both have been bailed ahead of the court appearances.

Enquiries into the reported assault of a player on the pitch after the final whistle are ongoing with officers working in partnership with both football clubs.

Steven Gerrard has spoken of his anger after Aston Villa goalkeeper Robin Olsen was allegedly attacked by Man City supporters following the full-time whistle. Thousands of City fans spilled out onto the pitch once their 3-2 victory was confirmed and, with it, their sixth Premier League title.

After full-time, Villa's debutant goalkeeper Olsen was seen holding his head before making his way down the tunnel. Asked if Villa players made it off the pitch OK, Gerrard replied: "No is the answer to that. My goalkeeper was attacked and I think those questions should go to Pep and Manchester City. We'll go and check if he's OK now."

Villa had been 2-0 ahead thanks to goals from Matty Cash and Philippe Coutinho before imploding inside five second half minutes with Ilkay Gundogan scoring in the 76th and 81st minutes, either side of Rodri's well-placed equaliser on 78 minutes.
