Tuesday wins dramatic Oaks after favourite Emily Upjohn’s awful start

Tuesday, trained by Aidan O’Brien and ridden by Ryan Moore, won a dramatic Oaks at Epsom, holding off Emily Upjohn by the narrowest of margins after the hot favourite virtually fell out of the stalls and lost many valuable lengths.

The trainer of the 13-2 shot was setting a record for the race by saddling his 41st winner in British Classics. His success on the Downs, his tenth in the Oaks, took O’Brien past John Scott, who saddled 40 Classic winners between 1827 and 1863.

“I always felt I was going to win,” said Moore. “She was a bit idle but she has an awful lot of class. [Aidan] is incredible.”

Frankie Dettori bemoaned his luck on the 6-4 market leader. “She slipped and lost her footing,” he explained. “I found myself last and had to go past the whole field. She was an unlucky loser. It was one of those things. She should have won.”

Hollie Doyle, attempting to create history by becoming the first female rider to win a British Classic race, was third on Nashwa. Her husband, Tom Marquand, finished sixth on Tranquil Lady.
