Tua Tagovailoa starts, has 1st pass picked off in Dolphins' win - ESPN

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa started in his team's 28-3 preseason victory over the Houston Texans on Saturday.

Tagovailoa hadn't played since Miami's loss to the Green Bay Packers last season on Christmas Day. He sustained a concussion in the game and was effectively shut down for the remainder of the season.

The Dolphins had the opening possession Saturday, and Tagovailoa's first-down pass was intercepted by Houston's Denzel Perryman. He recovered, finishing 5-of-7 for 61 yards, before giving way to backup Skylar Thompson.

Miami had released a list of players not expected to play against the Texans, which included wide receiver Jaylen Waddle and left tackle Terron Armstead, who are dealing with midsection and knee injuries, respectively.

Wide receiver Tyreek Hill, running back Raheem Mostert, cornerback Xavien Howard, safety Jevon Holland and linebacker Jaelan Phillips were not on that list, and all saw time in the win. Hill had one catch for 13 yards.

After the win, Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said rookie running back De'Von Achane suffered a shoulder injury, and the team will have more information on his status Sunday. Offensive guard Robert Jones (lower body) will also have imaging done Sunday, the coach said.

Achane took a hit in the third quarter. He was able to return to the sideline under his own power before leaving for the locker room on a cart. He did not return.

McDaniel also offered an update on Armstead, saying the veteran dodged anything substantial when he was injured in practice this week.

«In terms of a timeline, I'm not really worried about it,» McDaniel said. «I'm just worried about him getting ready as fast as possible, which I know he'll do.»
