Transfer contact confirmed between Preston North End and Liverpool for 20-year-old

Preston North End boss Ryan Lowe has confirmed his side are back in contact with Liverpool regarding another deal for centre-back Sepp van den Berg, speaking to Lancs Live.

The Dutchman is currently enjoying his second loan spell at Deepdale after first arriving under Alex Neil back in January 2021, impressing both in the centre and on the right as he showed his versatility.

With Neil and fellow former manager Frankie McAvoy working closely together prior to the former’s departure, it was perhaps no surprise to see the latter enter the market in the summer to recruit the 20-year-old once again.

And van den Berg has continued to be a key figure under Lowe, continuing to show his versatility in the early stages before reverting to his more natural position in recent months and has made an impressive 36 league appearances during the 2021/22 campaign, recording 41 competitive appearances in total.

Although he has only managed to get himself on the scoresheet twice for the Lancashire side this term, his defensive solidity has compensated for that, though his chances of remaining at Deepdale beyond the end of this season looked unlikely with the centre-back previously all but ruling out a return next term.

However, Preston are certainly keen on pursuing another move for the 20-year-old and Preston’s boss now believes the decision is in the player’s hands.

He said: “With Sepp, Liverpool were in here the other day for a full day, watching what we do and how we go about it.

“We’re in contact with them but again, it’s down to Sepp and what he wants to do.
