Tragedy as person dies on train tracks at station

A person has died on train tracks at a station near Wigan.

Emergency services were called to Appley Bridge station, just over the border in west Lancashire, just before 9.30pm last night (Thursday). British Transport Police said officers responded to 'reports of a casualty on the tracks'.

Sadly, the person was pronounced dead on the scene. No further details on them have been released at this stage.

Their death is not being treated as suspicious and will be referred to the coroner. Following the incident last night, train lines between Wigan Wallgate and Southport were blocked.

They were closed for several hours while emergency services responded, according to National Rail. In a statement, a British Transport Police spokesperson said: "Officers were called to Appley Bridge station shortly before 9.30pm on Thursday, 21 September following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

"Paramedics also attended but sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident is not being treated as suspicious. A file will be prepared for the coroner."
