Traffic builds on M4 after AA issues first ever amber warning - live updates

Traffic Wales is warning of heavy traffic on parts of the M4 just hours after the AA issued its first “amber traffic warning”. The motoring organisation predicts severe traffic on Friday and Saturday because of a combination of events.

It is the first switchover days for holiday lets during the school summer holidays in England and Wales, the rail strikes mean more cars on the roads and the Commonwealth Games have started in Birmingham. Read more about the train strikes here.

The AA said that the traffic is expected to peak between 11am and 3pm on Friday and Saturday, and just after 11am Traffic Wales warned of congestion on the M4. There is slow traffic eastbound between junction 30 Cardiff Gate and junction 26 Malpas, with travel time around 30 minutes just before noon.

They also warned about slow traffic on the A4232 southbound heading towards Cardiff from junction 33 Cardiff West. In other parts of the UK, roads approaching Dover and the Eurotunnel terminal at Folkestone are expected to be busy, as well as those serving Devon and Cornwall, such as the M5, A303 and A30.

The south-west and western sections of the M25, the Bristol M4/M5 junction, and the M6, M42, M1 and M62 are also vulnerable to jams this weekend.

Tens of thousands of families saw the start of their cross-Channel journeys ruined last weekend as the roads approaching Dover were gridlocked, leading to delays of several hours. This was blamed on a shortage of French border officers and a serious crash on the M20.
