Tough start for Stephanie Meadow at Portland Classic

Stephanie Meadow sat well down the leaderboard after an opening one-over par round at the Portland Classic.

Meadow's 73 left her 10 shots off clubhouse leader Perrine Delacour with a number of players still on the course late on Thursday night.

Starting on the 10th, Meadow made a perfect start with an opening birdie with eight straight pars following to close out her opening nine.

Bogeys at the first, fifth and seventh saw Meadow fall down the rankings, although a birdie on her penultimate hole helped.

Delacour’s round at the Columbia Edgewater Country Club was excellent given that conditions were tough for the early starters.

The French player was out in a brilliant 30 with three birdies in her final five holes helping her to a round of 63.

"We knew it was going to be wet, so my main goal was to try to get my club as dry as we can, which we did pretty good with my caddie," Delacour told the LPGA Tour website.

"I played solid. I hit 16 greens, and when I was missing them I was pretty easy up and down."
