Tottenham: One of £33.3m duo 'won't be at Hotspur Way next season'

Emerson Royal or Matt Doherty will leave Tottenham this summer, according to Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge.

The £33m-rated pair have been battling it out for the right wing-back spot this season, but with Antonio Conte actively looking to strengthen that area, Bridge expects one of the duo to be sold.

It’s generally been a mixed campaign for the two, who’ve both struggled for consistency, highlighting why the Tottenham boss is hoping to sign a right wing-back in the summer window.

Royal started the season as first choice following his move from Barcelona, but his opportunities haven’t been as frequent in recent months, with Doherty moving ahead of him in the pecking order.

As a result, the Republic of Ireland international has made himself Conte’s preferred choice of late, starting seven games on the bounce, in which he scored twice and chipped in with three assists.

However, the ex-Wolves defender suffered a knee problem in the recent victory against Aston Villa, which has ruled him out for the rest of the season and should allow Royal to keep his spot for the remainder of the campaign.

Regardless, Bridge still expects one of the two to be moved on as a result of Spurs’ summer transfer activity.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “I feel that one of Doherty or Royal won’t be at the club next season, I think Spurs will look to add someone in that position.

“Playing for their futures might be a bit strong, but Spurs will look to add someone.”

According to WhoScored, Doherty has outperformed the Brazilian in almost every department, including shots, goals, and assists, while his rating overall for the season is an impressive 6.98, compared to Royal’s 6.83.
