Tottenham Dumped Out Of The FA Cup By Middlesbrough After Shock 1-0 Defeat At The Riverside

Middlesbrough are through to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup after a shock 1-0 win over Tottenham at the Riverside.

Academy product Josh Coburn, 19, smashed in the winner in the first half of extra-time to secure a memorable win for the Championship club.

It’s the second consecutive giant-killing for Middlesbrough, who beat Manchester United on penalties in the previous round.

Defeat for Tottenham means they are destined to finish the season without major silverware yet again.

It is also the third season in a row they have lost in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

After being brought on in extra-time, Coburn latched on to Matt Crooks' through ball to fire the winner past Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris from a tight angle.

"I hit it as hard as I could and thankfully it went in. Up there with the best (moment of career), just amazing. I can't put it into words.

"In the training ground, all the lads are buzzing. The fans are getting behind the players too.

“Hopefully we can continue it and get another big team in the next round."

Tottenham came closest to scoring through Harry Kane, who had a goal disallowed for offside in normal time.

Spurs will now have to wait another season for their chance of silverware, having last won a trophy in 2008.

“It is massively disappointing,” former Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe told the BBC.

“No disrespect to Middlesbrough but you expect Tottenham to come here and dominate, create a lot of chances, your big players to show personality.

“But it was the total opposite. Middlesbrough with the urgency, as the game went on they got stronger and stronger.

“They had players coming on and making an impact.

"It was a big disappointment [for Spurs].”
