Tottenham: £92k-a-week star now has 'very good chance' of England call-up

Tottenham Hotspur defender Eric Dier has a ‘very good chance’ of earning an England recall this month, according to The Sun reporter Tom Barclay.

The 28-year-old has been much-improved under the guidance of manager Antonio Conte for the best part of a year now and could be rewarded with a place in Gareth Southgate’s setup.

Dier has earned 45 caps for England since Roy Hodgson handed him his international debut aged 21 back in 2015 but has been absent for quite some time now.

In fact, the centre-back last played for the Three Lions against Iceland in a Nations League fixture in November 2020, with Southgate preferring the likes of Harry Maguire, John Stones and Tyrone Mings over him.

But Dier has played his way into form throughout Conte’s reign at Tottenham and continues to thrive in a back three where he has additional cover and support on either side.

And with England often adopting a similar setup, the 6 foot 2 ace could be brought back into the fold by Southgate for the upcoming fixtures against Italy and Germany later this month.

Barclay believes that Dier ‘has got a lot to his game’ and that he is an ‘obvious’ choice to be selected if Southgate does decide to play three central defenders.

He told GiveMeSport: “You just think with England, I know he mixes it up a bit, but if he is going with a three, I think Dier is the obvious one.

“In particular, with Maguire out of favour and not playing for Man United. He’s quicker than Maguire, I don’t know if he’s as good a defender. I know Maguire’s being hammered at the moment, so I’m talking about when Maguire is playing well.
