Topless Brits holidaying in popular Spanish destination targeted by posters and €750 fine

Brits abroad are a tourist category in and of themselves. Often known for our love of getting sozzled in the sunshine, as well as for getting a one-day sunburn, some holidaymakers hailing from the UK might find themselves in hot water if they start stripping off at a popular Spanish destination.

Posters have been put up all around Malaga, which has long been a favourite holiday spot for people in this country, urging visitors to "dress completely" after hordes of half-dressed and no doubt beetroot-red Brits have made the place look unseemly. And if you are caught with your top off in the sun-drenched tourist trap, you are likely to head home with a large fine for public indecency.

And if there was any doubt that this campaign has British tourists in mind, the signs are printed first in English with a series of warnings, while there is a smaller Spanish translation underneath. It urges tourists to wear an article of clothing on their upper half at all times.

Malaga locals have long seen half-naked Brits as a problem in their Mediterranean-facing city, first passing a law in 2023 to ban walking around in public without being fully dressed, according to the Independent. This can land you a €750 fine, simply for showing off your guns in the sun.

The problems of over-tourism have become more apparent in popular destinations across Spain following the Covid pandemic, which has seen millions more holidaymakers pick the sunny European country for the summer hols. This has led to spiralling housing problems due to Airbnb, as well as more simple problems like litter and lairy drunks.
