NEW YORK — Serena and Venus Williams fell in the first round of the US Open women's doubles draw Friday night, losing 3-6, 7-6 (6), 6-7 (10-7) to Maya Joint and Hao-Ching Chan.
After losing the first set, the Williams sisters battled in a topsy-turvy second set. It eventually wound up in a tiebreak which Serena and Venus won 8-6 to force a decisive set.
Joint and Chan seemed to have taken control in the third set. After the set was tied 1-1, they won the next three games. But Serena and Venus stormed back to win three straight themselves, making it 4-4. The two doubles teams split the next four games resulting in a tiebreak.
The Williams sisters seemed to have control in the final tiebreak, going up 5-0. Joint and Chan won 10 of the next 12 points, however, to storm back and eliminate Serena and Venus from play.
