Tonbridge Angels weigh up switch to daytime training as part of new academy launch

Tonbridge Angels are exploring the possibility of daytime training as they prepare to launch a new academy.

It would be a major step forward for the National League South club, who currently train two nights a week.

The new post-16 academy, which is set to open in September, presents Angels with an ideal chance to make the switch.

It would certainly be the preference for manager Alan Dunne, as Tonbridge look to compete in a division with an ever-increasing number of full-time and hybrid clubs.

“We haven’t finalised anything but it’s likely the men’s first team will be doing some daytime training next season, which is a big step for us,” said Tonbridge chair Sophie Purves.

“This would fit in really well because the academy would be able to train alongside the men’s first team as we try to create a proper pathway.

“I think it’s really positive and daytime training is something Alan wants, it’s something he’s used to, so we’re just investigating that at the moment.

“At the moment discussions are about daytime only, but we’re looking at the various models because obviously there’s the hybrid where you could train in the evening and a couple of mornings, which some clubs do.

“So this is the area of discussion but the focus at the moment is to get our 50 points to make sure we’re competing in the National League South next season.”

Tonbridge remain six points clear of the bottom four, in 17th place, after an injury-time goal saw them beaten 1-0 at home by Maidenhead on Tuesday night.

Angels, who saw last weekend’s game at Weston-super-Mare postponed due to a waterlogged pitch, visit title-chasing Hornchurch this Saturday (3pm).
