Tom Brady ’s response to a question from Cristiano Ronaldo seemed to foreshadow his retirement U-turn.
Last night the NFL legend made the shock announcement that he would be returning for his 23rd season, and third with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The news came just 40 days after stating his legendary career was over but, after what seemed impossible, the American will take to the field next season.
He tweeted: “These past two months I’ve realised my place is still on the field and not in the stands.
“That time will come. But it’s not now. I love my teammates, and I love my supportive family.
“They make it all possible. I’m coming back for my 23rd season in Tampa. Unfinished business LFG.”
The 44-year-old went to see Ronaldo in action at Old Trafford this past Saturday, where he scored a hat-trick in a 3-2 victory over Tottenham.
Brady’s Buccaneers are owned by the Glazer family, who also run Manchester United.
The sporting greats met on the pitch after the game and shared a conversation in which Ronaldo asked Brady about his future.
Cristiano asked Brady: “You’re finished, right?”, to which the NFL icon replied with what sounded like: “That’s what I don’t know.”
Brady’s uncertain response now indicates that perhaps he was thinking about reversing his retirement decision at the time.
