Tom Aspinall plots path to Jon Jones fight following impressive UFC London comeback

Tom Aspinall announced his return to the Octagon at UFC London last weekend with a stunning win and now says he is targeting a world title shot against Jon Jones within his next two fights.

The 30-year-old heavyweight, from Atherton in Greater Manchester, beat Marcin Tybura in a stunning performance at the O2 Arena in London last Saturday. He was rewarded with ‘Performance of the Night’ with a first-round TKO against his Polish counterpart in a win which underlines his credentials as one of the top heavyweight fighters in the world.

It is a stark contrast to 12 months ago when, as a headliner at UFC London in July 2022, a devastating knee injury in the first round against Curtis Blaydes led to a year out of the Octagon. The MCL injury he suffered within seconds of the fight getting underway led to his first UFC defeat after his retirement from the contest.

Despite that loss, Aspinall has said that he has come back stronger, with the adversity of a major injury having added an inner steel to the 6ft 5in competitor’s technical skillset. Speaking to the Manchester Evening News nearly a week after his win at the O2 Arena, Aspinall outlined his renewed passion for the sport and described his now ‘unshakeable’ mental strength.

When asked whether his time away has made him stronger, he said: “I am so much more mentally strong now than I've ever been in my life. To be honest, I feel really, really good about everything.

“I just feel pretty unshakeable now mentally, which is great.” He added. “I really enjoyed the process of fight week as well, I really enjoyed the process of walking out and being in the cage.
