'To be honest' - Anthony Gordon makes Richarlison admission after being given goal in Everton win over Leeds
Anthony Gordon was delighted to get on the scoresheet during Everton’s 3-0 win over Leeds United on Saturday - but admitted he wasn’t sure he’d be given the goal.
The Toffees were 2-0 up by half-time thanks to strikes from Seamus Coleman and Michael Keane.
Richarlison appeared to score the third after firing past Illan Meslier from the edge of the box.
However, the ball took a significant deflection off Gordon and the goal was later credited to him.
The 20-year-old revealed he was happy for Richarlison to celebrate as he wasn’t sure if he’d be awarded the goal.
"To be honest, I let Richy [Richarlison] celebrate because I didn’t really know the rules," Gordon told Everton’s official website .
"But I’ll take it! I’m delighted."
The win was Everton’s first in the Premier League under new manager Frank Lampard and only their second top-flight victory in 16 games.
The Toffees are now five points clear of the relegation zone and crucially have two games in hand over 18th-placed Norwich City.
Gordon hailed the role of the Goodison Park crowd in the vital victory over Leeds and also revelled in a first clean sheet since a goalless draw with Tottenham Hotspur in November.
