Tinkler not 'panicking' but admits City 'desperately' need a victory as Chiefs loom

Cape Town City are four matches into their DStv Premiership season, and still without a victory as they had to settle for a point against Stellenbosch FC in the Cape derby at Cape Town Stadium on Saturday.

Venezuelan forward Darwin Gonzalez opened the scoring for Eric Tinkler's charges with a well-taken header on the cusp of half-time and headed towards the tunnel even if they did not deserve the lead.

However, midway through the second-half, Stellies' Argentinian maestro Junior Mendieta, who usually scores with his left or right boot, added a headed effort to his goal-scoring tally to ensure a 1-1 draw.

Stellenbosch (6th) remained unbeaten in 12 matches that stretches back to last season, while City (15th) continue to search for that first win of the season.

City next face Kaizer Chiefs at home on Tuesday (19:30), before shifting their focus and traveling to KwaZulu Natal for their MTN8 quarter-final encounter against AmaZulu on Saturday (15:30).

Despite their winless run of games, Tinkler told reporters that he is not going to panic.

"A win is what we desperately need," he said after Saturday's game.

"It is still early in the league. Go look at the league table - see what happens if we win two in a row. Everything changes. They're small margins right now. 

"I am not panicking and I am not going to put my players into panic mode. We go into the Chiefs game looking for a positive result, which is a win. And that is what we need right now, is a win. 

"If you go into those games, saying, 'it's a must win, it's a have to win' and I apply all that pressure onto my staff and players, we ain't going to achieve nothing."
