Timo Werner thanks Chelsea fans for their support through the 'challenging times'

Timo Werner has thanked Chelsea supporters in his farewell letter to the club after he completed his move back to RB Leipzig on Tuesday.

The German striker has returned to the Bundesliga side on a four-year deal in a transfer worth a reported £25million, around half of what Chelsea paid Leipzig for him two years ago.

Werner failed to live up to expectations at Stamford Bridge, scoring just 23 goals in 89 matches across all competitions.

He will be somewhat fondly remembered by Blues fans however, thanks to his contributions that helped the club win the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup, as well as reach the finals of the FA Cup (twice) and the Carabao Cup.

He was often serenaded at home games in spite of his mixed performances, and the 26-year-old acknowledged the fans in his farewell letter.

‘Dear Blues, today marks the end of my journey with Chelsea FC,’ Werner posted on social media.

‘I am incredibly grateful for the time I spent at this special club. At this point I would like to express my appreciation for my teammates, the coaches and staff, and especially for you, the supporters of Chelsea Football Club.

‘I felt so much love and support throughout the last two years and I will never forget how you guys stood behind me in good and in challenging times!

‘We lifted trophies like the Champions League together and I will always remember the song you wrote and chanted for me. I’m already looking forward to hopefully playing at Stamford Bridge again one day!’

With 95 goals and 40 assists in just 159 games, Werner is Leipzig’s all-time leading goal scorer and added that he was delighted to be back at the Red Bull affiliated club.
