Three players Manchester United can pick up for free to improve their summer transfer window

Manchester United are going to have to address a number of problem areas in the summer window but they may not have the budget they expected to do it.

The Telegraph are reporting that if United make the top four they will be able to have a transfer window with a net spend of around £80million.

However if they fail to claim a Champions League spot that budget will be reduced to only £50m with player sales on top.

Most of the kitty will be likely spent on the two major problem areas of defensive midfield and on a young striker but it stands to reason that United need reinforcements in other areas.

If Dean Henderson leaves they will need a backup goalkeeper and given the lack of depth in defensive midfield already, another versatile addition in that area would be a shrewd acquisition.

With a number of elite players available for free across Europe, United could also add another string to their bow in the attack given the possible departure of Anthony Martial.

Noussair Mazraoui would have been a great signing to improve the team at right-back, but journalist Mike Verweij has said that it is unlikely that he moves to the Premier League in the summer. So which free agents should United sign:

GK - Sam Johnstone

Not the most inspiring pick for the first choice on this list, but if Henderson leaves Old Trafford, United need to find a solid back-up to David de Gea.

The 28-year-old left United in 2018 after never really breaking into the first-team following his heroics in the youth sides, but since then he has established himself as a decent goalkeeper in a West Brom side that has struggled in both the Premier League and the Championship.
