Three held on suspicion of murder after man found unconscious at tower block in "unexplained" death

Three men have been arrested on suspicion of murder after a man was found unconscious at a Salford tower block and later died. Police say the cause death is "unexplained" at this stage.

The alarm was raised last night at Briar Hill Court, a 1970, 25-storey block which looms above the city's Precinct at Pendleton, with the red "Salford Shopping City' logo and arrow pointing down.

In a statement Greater Manchester Police said: "Officers were called to Briar Hill Court, Salford, at about 10:25pm on 17 June 2024 to reports a man was unconscious. NWAS also attended and took the man to hospital where he was sadly pronounced dead about an hour later

"His death is currently being treated as unexplained and enquiries are ongoing. Three men have been arrested on suspicion of murder and remain in custody while the full circumstances are established."

The Manchester Evening News understands the man who died has not yet been identified and a post mortem is due to be carried out later today.

The block was featured in a painting by artist Chelsea Entwistle wrapped in fairy lights in an image used on Christmas Cards last year.

Briar Hill Court was council-owned but was sold to a private company in 1994. In 2016 a dramatic kitchen fire broke out on the 20th floors.

Although no-one was hurt in the blaze, a small number of residents in the 134-flat complex were treated for smoke inhalation while others residents fled the building during the drama.
