Thousands in Majorca take part in 'anti-tourism' protests with ominous warning for Brits

Thousands of protesters marched through the streets of Majorca’s capital on Saturday demonstrating against the impacts of mass tourism on the island. Around 15,000 people took part in demonstrations in the city on the evening of May 25.

Protestors were holding signs saying “SOS Tourism” and “Salvem Mallorca, guiris arruix'' which translates from Catalan as "Let's save Majorca, foreigners out", ‘guiri’ being an offensive term for tourists. It came only 24 hours after similar protests were held on the neighbouring island of Ibiza.

The demonstrators marched through the streets heading towards Weyler Square and chanted ‘go home’ to tourists. One holidaymaker, Polly Taylor, was dining in Palma with friends when it happened and described the protest as a “storm”.

The protests follow weeks of growing concerns over the impact of tourism in Spanish holiday destinations, which protesters say is driving up housing prices for locals. Demonstrators have called for a more sustainable tourism model to be introduced.

President of the Balearic Islands Marga Prohens has previously said that “limits” needed to be set. Posting on X, she
