'They know how to use me': Striker Rayners' bond with coach Barker propels Stellenbosch forward

Stellenbosch striker Iqraam Rayners says his recent run of good form is a result of his relationship with Steve Barker.

The 27-year-old former Stellies striker re-joined his former club from SuperSport United.

Rayners was a big part of the Cape-based side's promotion campaign in 2019 in which he scored 18 goals to claim the National First Division golden boot that year.

That excellent form followed him into the DStv Premiership before he signed with SuperSport United in 2020. But he was less successful with Matsatsantsa over the past few campaigns and made his return to Stellenbosch in January.

And in 10 games, Rayners has netted an impressive 13 goals alongside three assists.

"Me and coach Steve Barker have always had a good understanding," he told Radio 2000.

"We always understand each other and the technical team. They have always believed in me, and I am happy to give them my best and help the team. That's all that matters to me.

"No one did not expect it [to hit the ground running fast]. When I arrived from SuperSport in January, I set myself a target that I just wanted to score 10 goals in five months.

"That was my target, but now maybe I can push for more league goals. Maybe by the end of the season, I can have at least 11 or 12 goals or maybe more than that because I only have three games left."

Rayners added: "I am playing more of a different role at Stellenbosch, and the team knows how to use me, actually. I am happy with my form, and I am happy for the team because we are in a good log position now."

Stellies, who are seventh in the premiership standings on 33 points, are back in action on Saturday when they entertain Golden Arrows, also on 33 points but with an inferior goal difference, in a DStv Premiership clash at
