‘They haven’t got that’ – Pundit bemoans Chelsea for lacking one thing needed to take next step

Jamie Redknapp has explained the reasons Chelsea are struggling, admitting they “haven’t got” a genuine goalscorer like a “Drogba or Costa”.

Chelsea would have felt the signing of Romelu Lukaku could elevate them back to a Premier League powerhouse. While he started strong, his form has dropped off massively.

The Belgian scored three goals in his first three league games. Since then, though, he has scored just two Premier League goals, and has fallen out of favour.

Thomas Tuchel has instead utilised Kai Havertz up front a lot of the time. While he has bagged 13 goals in all competitions, he is not an out-and-out striker.

Nor is second-highest scorer Mason Mount – who has 12 goals.

Chelsea have found themselves third in the Premier League for much of this season. They have struggled to keep up with Manchester City and Liverpool, and Redknapp thinks that can be attributed to their lack of a genuine forward.

“They felt Romelu Lukaku was going to be the missing piece to the jigsaw, the man who would get them 20, 25 goals to elevate them to the title race and it hasn’t worked out,” he said on Sky Sports.

Chelsea may look to replace to the forward – if they are able to – before next season.

Redknapp was complimentary of deputy striker Havertz, but told Chelsea what they need to contend for the title.

“[Timo] Werner’s not a natural finisher. Havertz, I love his movement. But they haven’t got that goalscorer like a [Didier] Drogba or [Diego] Costa who’s going to get you the 20 or 25 goals that you are going to need to win the title and that’s really
