'They are standing for you' - Leicester City striker receives ovation from fans

Leicester City loanee George Hirst received a standing ovation from Portsmouth fans on Saturday after scoring a brace in their 4-0 win over Accrington Stanley.

The 23-year-old opened the scoring after a quarter of an hour with a first-time finish into the bottom corner and added another soon after the half-time break by firing in a bullet header from a corner kick.

Hirst has now scored four goals across the last four League One starts for Pompey as they look to make a late push for a play-off place.

Manager Danny Cowley, who recently confirmed that they "would like to sign" the centre-forward permanently at Fratton Park, has poured praise on Hirst after this most recent performance.

Asked about Hirst's current form and confidence, Cowley told HampshireLive : "I said to him as he was coming off, ‘They are standing for you, kid.’ The ovation he got was so well deserved.

"What I liked about him was that he played well Tuesday, and he backed it up. Good players, they back it up.

"I thought he showed humility; I thought he showed a real desire. He’s been a really, really important part of this run."

That match on Tuesday came against Oxford United, who sit fourth in the table, when Hirst again scored and put in a performance that the manager dubbed as "unplayable" and "his best for" Pompey.

Our colleagues at HampshireLive also reported at the time that Cowley even told Hirst the performance was reminiscent of one by Didier Drogba during the Ivory Coast international's illustrious Chelsea career.

Hirst has now scored eight goals across all competitions, every one of which has come during or since the month of November.
