There’s a secret garden less than an hour’s drive from Manchester and it’s absolutely stunning

Although there are lots of amazing gardens open to the public across the UK, some of the most beautiful spots are hidden away in people’s own backyards. While many of these gems are out of bounds to visitors, there are a few who open their doors (or should we say gates) to let others enjoy their hard work.

Located in the outskirts of Chorley next to the M61, less than hour's drive from Manchester, is The Ridges, a white ivy-clad Georgian house. From the road side it appears unassuming, but head down the side alley and pass through an ornate gate and you’ll arrive at its impressive 3.5 acre garden.

The Ridges is run by Barbara Barlow and her husband John, who’ve opened the gardens to the public since the early 1990s. It feels like a mini-version of the gardens at a stately home: with walled areas, formal lawn and a woodland walk.

Yet small details hint that this is a family affair and that you’re being welcomed into a much-loved private garden. Upon arrival you ring a brass bell then a volunteer greets you with a laminated map and you’re left to explore by yourself.

Following helpful numbered signs along the way, you walk across a rustic bricked path through the first part of the orchard garden, surrounded by plants on either side with apple trees overhead. This takes you up to the first of many gates, with a quaint sign reminding you to close it after yourself - visitors are welcome at The Ridges, but rabbits are not.
