There’s a gorgeous ornamental garden tucked off a main road in Altrincham

Tucked away off Dunham Road in Altrincham is a tranquil green oasis centred around a beautiful Victorian House. Denzell Gardens is a small but charming ornamental park filled with a range of plants and stunning details.

At the centre of the gardens is Denzell House, which was built in 1874 by Robert Scott. It was bought by wealthy industrialist Samuel Lamb at the start of the 20th Century.

The gardens surrounding the house were transformed under Lamb’s ownership with the help of 16 gardeners. They created landscaped areas, a croquet lawn, tennis court and formal gardens, as well as growing fruits and orchids inside greenhouses.

A variety of trees were planted in the gardens including American lime, Mongolian pine and red horse chestnut, which can still be seen today. Following Lamb’s death in 1936 the gardens were passed onto Bowdon Urban District Council, who opened the gardens to the public.

Today Denzell Gardens is operated by Trafford Council, although the house is used privately for offices. A group of volunteers, Friends of Denzell Gardens, have helped to restore many of the original features.

Take a wander around the gardens and you’ll come across a beautiful sunken garden, which is around 25m in length and the Peace Garden which features seasonal flowers. There's also a beautiful pond overlooked by trees.

Throughout the gardens are plenty of benches to sit on, where you can relax and enjoy your surroundings. It’s even a popular spot for wedding photos.

The gardens are open daily from dawn to dusk. There are a few parking spaces available just inside the Dunham Road entrance.
