The tiny riverside village under an hour from Greater Manchester with an abandoned mansion and views for miles

While Manchester and the surrounding area is packed full of things to do, sometimes it's nice to get away from it all and venture into the countryside. Fortunately you don’t have to travel far to find yourself surrounded by idyllic rural scenery.

Located three miles from Blackburn, Feniscowles is a tiny village with its own hidden gem. Tucked away near to the banks of the River Darwen are the impressive ruins of an abandoned manor house.

If you look at the ruins today you can get a sense of the grand building it once was. In fact it was the 19th century Feniscowles Hall, which was once home to former MP Sir William Fielden and his family, Lancs Live reports.

Examine the ruins up close and you’ll discover fascinating details, such as wooden window frames and intricate brickwork. The manor house is set in a stunning location, with the river flowing by it.

It’s a scenic spot and you can just imagine what life was like living at a home surrounded by acres of meadows, ornamental gardens, glass conservatories, walled fruit trees and stables for 12 horses.

The manor was built in 1808, but it was abandoned in 1880 by the Fieldens when it became overcome by the disgusting ‘river stink’ as a result of heavy pollution in the area. Sadly it fell into a state of disrepair, but it’s still a fascinating place to see.

Feniscowles itself is located on Preston Old Road between the Leeds-Liverpool Canal and the River Darwen. Thanks to its location and reputation of the local schools make it a magnet for families.
