The pretty park with a lake you can walk around which is a haven for wildlife

Just outside of Leigh is a country park which is home to a wide variety of wildlife and draws in birdwatchers from far and wide. Pennington Flash is an impressive nature reserve with a 70 hectare lake at its centre.

It’s the perfect place to lose yourself in nature. There are trails you can follow along the water’s edge as well as through the surrounding woodland.

There are routes for cyclists and bridle paths, while there is also sailing and windsurfing available at Leigh and Lowton Sailing club. The park also features a 9-hole golf course.

The park is home to a range of habitats including reeds and woodland, attracting a variety of birds, mammals and insects. Even if you’re not an expert you’re likely to spot various creatures while walking around and children will love looking out for them too. You’ll find hides dotted throughout the nature reserve area, perfect for bird watching.

There’s a play area for children and on sunny days you’ll find an ice cream van parked up. Or bring along a picnic and relax on one of the benches overlooking the lake.

The lake itself, called the Flash, was formed as a result of mining subsidence and flooding. The area was opened as a country park in the 1980s.

Parking is available at the site from 6am until 8pm daily, which costs £1.50 for the whole day. There are also toilets and picnic areas available.
