The players that will leave Wigan Athletic on a free this summer unless contracts are renewed

Wigan Athletic are closing in on promotion back to the Sky Bet Championship and Latics fans will surely be excited already to see what next season might hold.

Of course, the players cannot get ahead of themselves and must see the job through but it would take a very surprising collapse at the end of this campaign for the Latics to not get things over the line now.

That said, then, the club may already be planning for the summer transfer window and trying to make their squad ready for the tests that the Championship will offer, and that will surely include taking a look at the players whose contracts are coming to an end.

As per transfermarkt, there are three players whose deals are approaching their expiry date – that are not on loan at the club – and we’re taking a look at them now…

James McClean is the first man whose deal is currently set to expire this summer, with him rejoining the Latics on a short-term deal after leaving Stoke City.

Of the three players we’re looking at here, he has easily played the most this season for Wigan, and that may help him in a potential battle to sign a new contract.

He obviously has Championship experience, too, so that might be a factor he also considers.

Gavin Massey is another more senior head whose contract is up in the summer, but with him playing more as a bit-part player and regularly coming on as a sub, it remains to be seen if the Latics opt to keep him around.

And, finally, young defender Luke Robinson also sees his contract coming to a close this summer.

With years still on his side, Wigan may think it’s worth giving him another deal and seeing how he can progress further, but time will only tell as to what they want to do.
