But there was a lot of chatter about the Real Madrid man in the run-up to the match with Spanish newspaper Marca labelling the former Tottenham striker as a ‘parasite’.

Their scathing accusations came after Bale has supposedly taken advantage of the club, with the newspaper implying the Welshman had ‘sucked blood out of Madrid’ accepting a wage but not making himself available for the La Liga side, choosing to turn out for Wales instead.

It was a scathing report of the four-time Champions League winner, whose career in Spain has been waning for some time, with Bale only playing two hours of football in the past six months for Los Blancos.

But it’s fair to say that he really did show his detractors up last night, scoring two pretty incredible goals, the first of which was a stunning free-kick that was just out of this world.

While we already knew the Welshman has some incredible skills in his locker, Bale reminded us why he was once the highest transfer in football history with this absolutely stunning free-kick from 25 yards out.

Struck with immeasurable precision, the shot climbed over the wall of Austrian players in front of him and dipped just in time, clipping the bar as it sailed into the top right-hand corner of the net.

Not even the best goalkeepers in the world are saving that.
