The moment Prime Minister Liz Truss confirms new monarch King Charles III

Prime Minister Liz Truss has officially confirmed King Charles III as the new monarch of the United Kingdom.

In a speech on the steps of 10 Downing Street, the new Prime Minister, in her role for less than a week, paid tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth II. It comes after her death was announced this afternoon (Thursday, September 8).

In a statement today announcing the Queen's death, Buckingham Palace said: “The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”

Giving her own statement Ms Truss said the country would now support the King.

“Today the crown passes, as it has done for more than 1,000 years, to our new monarch, to our new head of state, His Majesty King Charles III," she said.

“We offer him our loyalty and devotion, just as his mother devoted so much, to so many, for so long.

“And with the passing of the second Elizabethan age, we usher in a new era in the magnificent history of our great country, exactly as Her Majesty would have wished, by saying the words ‘God save the King’.”
