The moment Ben Foster knew his Manchester United career was over

Watford goalkeeper Ben Foster is set for another reunion with former club Manchester United this weekend.

The one-time future of the United goalkeeper jersey is looking to complete the double over the Reds after a 4-1 win which ended Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's reign earlier in the campaign.

Foster was considered a hugely talent prospect when United signed him from Stoke City in 2005 and soon made good on those reports with a fine season on loan at Watford.

The keeper re-joined Watford for another campaign and in which time he made his senior England debut.

All signs appeared to point towards Foster being United's goalkeeper for years to come, but in the end made just 23 first-team appearances over three seasons before being sold to Birmingham in 2010.

Looking back, the now-38-year-old highlighted two trademark Sir Alex Ferguson hairdryer treatments which made clear he was not cut out for life at Old Trafford.

Speaking on the Peter Crouch Podcast back in 2020, Foster explained: "I started the 2009-10 season and did really well. Then I had a few shaky games. The one game which did it for me was the United v City derby. 4-3; the Michael Owen one.

"I remember coming in at full-time and Sir Alex Ferguson nailed me. We’d just won the game, so everyone was buzzing. He shut everyone up to nail me. He said, ‘You pull this s**t ever again and that’s you f*****g done’.

"Thankfully he kept me in the team and I had a few more decent games, but then I dropped another clanger. We were at home to Sunderland. Kenwyne Jones bullied me to the ball and scored with the header.
