The Mohamed Salah question Chelsea must answer and what it means for Christian Pulisic decision

Did Chelsea make a mistake selling Mohamed Salah in 2016? Most would instinctively say yes given what the Egyptian has done since then, excelling for Roma in Serie A before coming back to haunt the Blues with Liverpool on several occasions.

Context does matter, however. Back when Salah originally left Chelsea they had a title-winning attack under Jose Mourinho with Eden Hazard dominating the left, Diego Costa the perfect talisman and either Willian or Pedro completing the trio. The season before Salah returned to the Premier League, Chelsea won another title.

Purely on silverware, Chelsea have done okay without Salah but as we sit here in June 2022, six years after his sale, the Blues' current attack has severely regressed since the 2017 title triumph.

The danger of another Salah or Kevin De Bruyne situation is one of constant concern for supporters and the current tale of Christian Pulisic fits into this category. At 23, the American has certainly been given more opportunities than either Salah or De Bruyne had, but injuries have severely halted his progress since his £58m transfer from Borussia Dortmund in 2019.

Pulisic blends into the conversation with a lot of the current attack. He has some nice flashes, interesting attributes and previous strong spells of form that we can recall to justify him remaining a part of the squad. But there are also long spells without an end product, poor performances, technical flaws and a feeling he does not fit in with the current system.
