The litany of failures and toxic culture uncovered in inadequate care home

A distressed care home resident was abandoned in a dining room by staff who claimed they had been 'kicking off all morning'. Inspectors from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) said the action from staff at Burrswood Care Home, in Bury, amounted to 'an abusive restrictive practice' - and urged carers to look after the resident properly.

It was one of a series of shocking failings that the CQC uncovered during their latest visit to Burrswood, where inspectors slammed a 'toxic culture' among staff. The care home has now been placed into special measures, having been rated 'inadequate' by the CQC in every part of its inspection.

The report, published this week, follows a four-day inspection in August. Inspectors had serious concerns around safeguarding, including 'at least six examples' of incidents or altercations between residents which had not been reported, plus the incident of a person in a wheelchair being left 'exhibiting distressed behaviours' in the dining room by staff for more than 20 minutes.

The CQC found that medicines were not being managed safely, with some being out of stock. The CQC found one resident had missed doses of their heart medicine for two weeks, and another who was unable to have their regular pain relief for 18 days, while staff had applied creams to some people who had not been prescribed them.
