The hidden woodland waterfall less than an hours’ drive from Manchester

With spring upon us there’s no excuse for not getting outside and making the most of the sunshine. It’s a brilliant time to explore the incredible countryside which is just on our doorstep.

Just over the border, north of Ramsbottom, is the village of Edenfield. It’s the starting point for several walks though the Lancashire countryside - but you don’t have to walk far to discover it’s best-kept secret.

From the centre of the village head east along Plunge Road and at the end you’ll come across the stunning Edenfield Waterfall, hidden among the trees. With water tumbling over a crag into a big pool below, it’s a stunning waterfall which you wouldn’t expect so near to the village.

Despite how easy it is to get to, it’s a rather secluded spot and even some of the local residents don’t know it’s there. Listening to the sounds of the waterfall and admiring the crystal-clear pool is the perfect way to relax and clear your mind.

Edenfield Waterfall is around half a mile from the village centre, and although there is limited parking available near the falls, there’s plenty of places in the village itself. The proximity to the centre makes it a great family-friendly walk, with the option of just visiting the waterfall alone.

Kids will love exploring the surrounding area and watching the waterfall as it cascades down, but always make sure they are supervised as it can be slippery underfoot. It’s worth bringing a pair of wellies or wearing suitable boots if you want to get close to the water too, as it can be muddy underfoot.
