The FIA is set to present its Abu Dhabi investigation findings to Formula 1 today
The Formula 1 commission is set to go ahead today with the topic at the head of the agenda the finale of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix back in December, and the proposals that are going to be put forward for the future in light of it.
The 2021 season ended in hugely controversial circumstances as Max Verstappen took the race, and championship, victory on the final lap away from Lewis Hamilton, who had been in control of the Grand Prix for its duration.
Indeed, it all stemmed from Race Director Michael Masi deciding to only let the cars between the two title rivals unlap themselves before bringing in the Safety Car, in what seemed an unprecedented interpretation of the rules.
And, off of the back of that, the FIA confirmed it would be investigating the situation with potential actions from that ranging from the removal of Masi altogether from his post, to a restructure of the Race Director role that might help alleviate some of the pressure one person has to deal with.
Whatever they’ve come up with, they will now be presenting it to Formula 1 in London today, with the teams, the FIA and F1 all in attendance.
Without doubt, it’s a crunch meeting for all involved, as they look to find clarity over what went on in Abu Dhabi and, most importantly, learn just what is going to be happening moving forwards to try and ensure such controversy does not repeat itself in the future.
Whatever the result, though, the hope has to be that it will restore faith in the sport and governing body with some fans, particularly those of Hamilton, naturally disappointed with how things played out.
We’ll soon see what the proposals are.
