The farm on the edge of Greater Manchester that's £5 for five people and includes a free brew

Unless it's a trip to the park or a family walk, there are few places to take the kids that don't end up costing a fortune.

But there are some little gems that are worth a visit where you don't need to spend an arm and a leg.

One of them is AppleCast on the outskirts of Wigan and entry costs just £5 for a family of five and includes a free hot drink.

The venue is home to goats, pigs, sheep, horses, alpacas and a whole lot more. There are smaller ones too, including rabbits and guinea pigs, and there are owls and other birds including some baby rheas, which you might confuse with ostriches.

For £1 you can buy a bag of animal feed to share on your way round the petting farm.

There's a picnic area next to the chickens and ducks - with children's picnic boxes for sale - and there's an adventure play area for little ones to enjoy and a gift shop too.

If you do have a little cash to splash then it's worth a visit to the Apple Cafe and dessert parlour selling fresh waffles and ice cream.

It opens every day from 10am until 3pm and the £5 entrance fee includes parking. You don't need to book so you can just turn up on the day. Dogs are welcome too.
