The eight biggest questions facing the 2022 NCAA men's basketball tournament selection committee

Selection Sunday. Maybe the best day on the college basketball calendar. It's finally here.

But while everyone is ready to fill out brackets, the selection committee is not quite ready to whittle the field down to 68 teams and seed them in the bracket.

Given the results in conference tournaments, the top of the bracket might have crystallized over the past few days, but the bubble has never been so crowded entering the final hours of the selection process — or so active. It hasn't clarified the field; it has added more questions and questions to the debates in the committee room.

How will the committee sort through everything in the final hours before the selection show? Here are the biggest questions the members have to answer:

Gonzaga is locked in as the overall 1-seed; the Zags have 10 Quadrant 1 wins and rank No. 1 in the NET, KenPom, BPI and Sagarin. Arizona is also locked into the top line after beating UCLA in the Pac-12 title game on Saturday night. The Wildcats are No. 2 in the NET, No. 2 at KenPom and No. 2 in Sagarin, plus the Wildcats have lost only three games all season. And after beating Texas Tech in the Big 12 title game, Kansas is certain to get a 1-seed. The Jayhawks have the most Quad 1 wins in the country, with 12, and they have 20 Quadrant 1 + 2 wins, also the most in the nation. They're also No. 1 in both résumé-based metrics, KPI and ESPN's strength of record.

But who will join them on the 1-line?

Baylor was the favorite entering Champ Week, then the Bears lost to Oklahoma in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 tournament. That opened the door for Auburn — until the Tigers were dropped by Texas A&M in the SEC quarterfinals. And then Kentucky had a chance, but the Wildcats lost to Tennessee in the SEC
