The disgraced teachers who were jailed after secret lives were exposed

Entrusted with the protection and support of our children, teachers face a huge responsibility to ensure young people are cared for and nurtured. So when a teacher falls foul of the law, their standing within the community makes their crimes even more shocking.

Among the teachers who have ended up in jail in recent times include a headteacher who sexually abused boys for years, a deputy head who embarked on a campaign of rape, and an IT teacher who committed 'reprehensible' sexual crimes.

All these cases involve Greater Manchester teachers who crimes shocked courts.

Slater's crimes were described as 'reprehensible'. He had a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old boy he met through a dating app.

Slater, 40, was working as an IT teacher at Byrchall High School, in Ashton-in-Makerfield, when he first made contact with his victim on Grindr. Slater then groomed the boy in a 'sophisticated and highly effective manner' between June and November 2019.

In vile conversations Slater described himself as a 'sex-obsessed pervert', and also said it wouldn't be a problem if the boy turned up to one of their meetings in his school uniform. Slater used a fake name online and, after grooming the boy, they met up for sexual activity on three occasions.

In April last year, Slater was jailed for five years and three months after pleading guilty to five counts of sexual activity with a child, three counts of possessing indecent images of a child, engaging in sexual communication with a child, inciting a child to watch sexual activity, and inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.
