The angry pensioner who fired a shotgun because of a neighbour's music

A man has been jailed for going to a neighbour's house to complain about the music before firing a shotgun into the ceiling. David Farrington, 68, pointed the weapon at his shocked neighbour, prompting a scuffle in which the gun went off, according to police.

Police were scrambled to the scene and Farrington, who was a registered firearms holder, was arrested. The shotgun was seized and during a search of his house, a further shotgun and several cartridges were found.

Now the pensioner has been jailed by a judge at Bolton Crown Court, providing what police described as 'closure' for Farrington's terrified victim.

Farrington, of Heath Street, Golborne, was jailed for three years and four months at Bolton Crown Court yesterday (Wednesday) after pleading guilty to possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence following a firearms discharge on his street on December 9 last year.

In addition to his sentence, Farrington was ordered to forfeit his ammunition and firearms, and was banned from possessing a firearms licence. He was also ordered to pay £228 costs.

Following the hearing, Detective Constable Riyaz Patel, if Wigan CID, said: "Farrington committed a very serious firearms discharge as a registered firearms holder, who should have known his responsibilities.

"I hope the sentenced imposed by the courts give the victim closure and shows that the police will investigate serious crime vigorously. Officers will always work thoroughly and diligently to punish those responsible for violent crimes in our communities."
