The £95m transfer deadline day moves Man City must avoid repeating

Manchester City’s recent transfer record is exceptional.

The Blues may have spent big over the years, but more often than not they get it right. And away from the big money arrivals, City recoup substantial fees time and again.

This year is no exception, they have raised significant sums selling fringe and academy talent along with the likes of Julian Alvarez and Joao Cancelo. It means £145million, before potential add-ons, has been added to the kitty and today’s deadline day is expected to be largely uneventful with the bulk of business already completed.

This time a year ago it was a slightly different story, with more than £90million changing hands on two major deals, neither of which have worked out for City. The decision to sell Cole Palmer for £42.5m to Chelsea at the time looked smart business, but a year on, and with Alvarez having left, there must be at least a hint of regret at the Etihad.

At City, Palmer was highly unlikely to be given the volume of games he received at Stamford Bridge last season, but his stunning progress and ever improving career trajectory have highlighted just how good a player City allowed to depart.

And as Palmer walked out of the Etihad, Matheus Nunes arrived. The midfielder cost north of £50m from Wolves but has failed to kick on in Manchester and has been linked with an exit this summer just 12 months into a five year deal.
