The 2025/2026 Premier League season already looks treacherous for 'embarrassed' Ruben Amorim
Ruben Amorim celebrated his 40th birthday in January, but he joked that it felt like his 50th birthday after spending a stress-inducing two months as Manchester United head coach.
Imagine how Amorim feels now that another four months have passed. United suffered a 17th defeat of the Premier League season against West Ham and have a goal difference of -11.
Amorim left behind a comfortable life in Portugal for a mammoth job in Manchester, perhaps the extent of which he didn't expect. Amorim didn't enjoy a 'new manager bounce' and abysmal performances in the Premier League have continued to produce shockingly bad results.
West Ham had won just four away games all season until they visited Old Trafford. They last won a league game against Leicester on February 27. "How s*** must you be, we're winning away," their fans sang.
The unwanted records stacked up with Erik ten Hag in charge last season, but more pages of shameful history have been written and the Europa League final is the only glimmer of hope in the darkness.
Amorim even admitted he was "embarrassed" of United's situation when he spoke in his post-match press conference. "How a manager of Manchester United is supposed to feel in that position: embarrassed, and it's hard to accept," said Amorim about what he was feeling.
"Everybody has to think seriously about a lot of things here. Everybody is thinking about the final, the final is not an issue in this moment in our club, we have bigger things to think and we have to change a lot of things at the end of the season."
So what changes can Amorim make? "I don't know and I don't want to talk about players, I'm talking about myself, I'm talking about the culture in the club and the culture in the team," he said.
