Tennis legend Hingis, Stephens, Jabeur head to SA to raise anti-GBV awareness

Five-time grand slam champion Martina Hingis, 2017 US Open champion Sloane Stephens and 2022 Wimbledon and US Open women’s runner-up Ons Jabeur are among the star names headed to South Africa to feature in a tournament aimed at raising anti-Gender Based Violence (GBV) awareness.

The tennis stars, including South Africa fledgling talents Khololwam Motsi and Isabella Kruger, will play in a tournament dubbed Africa Cares Tennis Challenge in Johannesburg this Saturday, which is aimed at promoting an international awareness-raising campaign for "No Violence Against Women and Children".

Also featuring will be German-Jamaican tennis player Dustin Brown, famous for ousting Rafa Nadal during the second round of Wimbledon in 2015.

The event, held at the Wanderers Stadium over two days this weekend, will also have former World No 1 Karolína Plíšková, and 22-year-old Brit Francesca Jones.

Tunisian Jabeur almost became the first African woman to win a major title in the grand slam era when she made the Wimbledon final, where she lost to Elena Rybakina in three sets.

Jabeur then lost to current women’s World No 1 Iga Swiatek in the US Open final.
