Teenager who died after car overturned in M62 smash is named

A teenager who died after a car overturned in a crash on the M62 has been named as Adnan Malek.

The one-car crash happened on the westbound side of the motorway near junction 21 for Milnrow at around 10.30pm last Thursday (December 21). Police said the driver 'lost control' before crashing into the central reservation.

The car - a grey Vauxhall Astra - then crashed onto the eastbound side of the motorway and overturned. Tragically, a 19-year-old male was pronounced dead at the scene.

He has now been named as Mr Malek, with a spokesperson for Rochdale Coroners' Court confirming that an inquest into his death is due to open this week. The driver - another 19-year-old male - suffered minor injuries, while another passenger escaped uninjured.

Later, the driver was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He has since been released under investigation.

A police probe is continuing. The motorway was fully shut off after the incident as investigations were carried out. It remained shut for hours in both directions between junction 21 and 22.

Any witnesses are now being urged to contact Greater Manchester Police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU). Officers are also keen to speak to anyone who has dash cam or mobile phone footage. Police can be contacted on 0161 856 4741 quoting reference number of 3685 of 21/12/2023.
