Taylor camp open talks with Croke Park for autumn bout

Katie Taylor's promotional company Matchroom Boxing have held talks with Croke Park over staging a fight in the stadium this autumn.

The current undisputed lightweight champion has not had a homecoming fight due to security concerns around professional boxing events in Ireland.

All of her professional bouts have been held in the UK or America.

The path has opened up for clearance for large scale boxing to return to Ireland and the possibility of the Wicklow woman breaking new boundaries in the sport.

Taylor beat Amanda Serrano in what was perceived to be the most significant bout in women’s boxing history at Madison Square Garden last month.

In the aftermath, a fight at Croke Park was mooted and Hearn has now revealed his team have visited Dublin to explore the possibility.

Speaking during an Instagram live video, Hearn has revealed a September fight is possible and his desire for Croke Park to be the number one option for Taylor’s next fight.

He said: "We'd like to (do it in Croke Park). We're speaking to a number of opponents.

"We'd love to do the Serrano rematch.

"A few of the guys here went over to speak to Croke Park. We shall see."

He also added that he is in no doubt Taylor has the appeal to draw a capacity crowd to one of the largest stadiums in Europe.

Government support for the event remains a possibility.

Hearn has previously touted UFC stars Cris Cyborg and Holly Holm as potential opponents for a Croke Park fight, but Serrano remains the obvious solution in making the event the most appealing to a global boxing audience given the manner in which the last fight played out.

Taylor v Serrano made history with 1.5 million viewers tuning in to watch across all television and streaming platforms.
