SINGAPORE: Teong Tzen Wei clinched Singapore’s first medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games after he took silver in the men’s 50m butterfly final.

At the Sandwell Aquatics Centre in Birmingham on Saturday (Jul 30) night local time, Teong clocked a time of 23.21. The event was won by England’s Benjamin Proud in a new Games record time of 22.81, while New Zealand's Cameron Gray took bronze.

Teong had qualified second overall in the semi-finals the day before with a time of 23.24. His personal best is 23.03, which he set in the semi-finals of last month’s FINA World Championships.

At the 31st SEA Games in May, Teong set a new SEA Games record with a timing of 23.04.

Saturday marked the second day of action for Singapore’s swimmers at the Games.

On Friday, Quah Ting Wen, Quah Zheng Wen, Quah Jing Wen and Jonathan Tan finished sixth in the mixed 4X100m freestyle relay final. Maximillian Ang also made the finals of the men’s 200m breaststroke where he finished sixth.
