Sutherland sets Canadian 400m hurdles record, settles for 2nd in NCAA championship

Canada's Savannah Sutherland can be proud of her performance despite settling for second place as the defending champion in the NCAA woman's 400m hurdles event on Saturday at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.

The 20-year-old Borden, Sask., native set Canadian records in two opportunities at the NCAA outdoor track and field championships. On Thursday, Sutherland posted a time of 54.04 seconds in the preliminary round before besting the mark on Saturday's final, when she stopped the clock at 53.26.

American Jasmine Jones finished first with a time of 53.15, setting a meet record. Rachel Glenn, also from the U.S. came third.

Barring illness or injury, Sutherland, an University of Michigan athlete, will arrive at the Canadian Olympic trials later this month in Montreal having qualified for the Paris Olympics.
